Internal Medicine is the
cornerstone of our practice. This is a broad field and
covers a wide spectrum of diagnostic and treatment
approaches. It includes, but is not limited to the
following:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Acute and chronic lung
diseases
- Viral and bacterial infections
in all areas of the body
- Diseases of the kidneys and
bladder
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Liver disease, including
Hepatitis B and C
- Diabetes, thyroid and other
endocrinology disorders
- Arthritis
- Musculoskeletal disorders
- Neurological disorders
- Blood disorders
- Osteoporosis and menopausal
problems
- Psychiatric disorders (mild to
moderate in severity)
- Common skin conditions
- Minor injuries
Addiction Medicine: All of our physicians have
undergone a rigorous training and examination process
and are certified by the American Society of Addiction
Medicine. ASAM is
the professional organization that represents physician
specialists in the field of Addiction Medicine.
The following services are provided:
Detoxification: Medically managed
detoxification includes the use of medications to
minimize the symptoms associated with drug withdrawal.
- Inpatient detoxification at
Mills-Peninsula Medical Center in Burlingame, CA.
See Mills
Peninsula
Behavioral Health Web page.
- Outpatient detoxification for
alcohol and opiates, through our office in South San
Francisco. Outpatient detoxification will only be
used in those cases where we feel it is medically
appropriate.
Rehabilitation Services:
- This is the most important
aspect of recovery. For many patients, quitting
drug use is “easy”, but “staying quit” is where the
challenge is. Rehabilitation is to help you “stay
quit.” There can be a lot of resistance to this
aspect of treatment, especially from patients who
have never been through a treatment program.
- We refer to a variety of local
addiction rehabilitation services. These include
the Mills-Peninsula Chemical Dependency Outpatient
Program, 12-Step Programs, LifeRing,
individual and group therapy and many
community-based treatment programs. Depending on
individual patient needs, we can refer to regional
and national residential treatment programs.
Important aspects of the recovery process include:
- Medically managed
detoxification
- Group therapy
- Family therapy
- Individual counseling
- Educational and interactive
lectures
- Stress reduction
- 12 Step programs
- Medical support from an
addiction specialist
- Anger
management
